Join us for Earth Day at the State House

April 27, 2011

2:00-4:00pm

Rhode Island State House

Please join the Coalition for Transportation Choices (CTC) and the Environment Council of Rhode Island (ECRI) for Earth Day Lobby Day on April 27th to tell your elected officials that you support the Transportation Investment and Debt Reduction Act

Never lobbied your legislator before? Check below for details on the briefings and other help we'll provide to get you ready.

The transportation sector is the single largest contributor to global warming pollution in New England, accounting for 37% of carbon dioxide emissions.

That's why so many environmental organizations have joined with the businesses, health, economic development, unions, seniors and youth advocates, as well as the tourism industry as members of the Coalition for Transportation Choices (our full list of members is in the column to the right).

The Rhode Island General Assembly has made significant progress on addressing the emissions from the electricity generating sector by promoting renewable energy and energy efficiency.

Now it's time to take the next step to promote convenient, affordable and accessible public transportation that will help to reduce global warming pollution by giving people the choice to take public transportation, walk or ride a bicycle.

The Earth Day program at the State House begins at 2:00 p.m. with "Watershed Counts," the first annual report on the condition of the Narragansett Bay Watershed.

At 3:00 p.m., you'll get the chance to hear all the details of the ECRI Legislative Agenda -- including information about the CTC's Transportation Investment and Debt Reduction Act -- with guest speakers Governor Lincoln D. Chafee, Senate Environment and Agriculture Committee Chairwoman V. Susan Sosnowski, and House Committee on Environment and Natural Resources Chairman Art Handy.

Following that presentation, CTC and ECRI staff and volunteers will help connect you with your state representative and/or senator so you can meet your elected officials one-on-one and ask them to support the Transportation Investment and Debt Reduction Act and other measures to provide Rhode islanders with safe, viable transportation choices.

RSVP to info@rictc.org let us know you can join us, or feel free to just show up during the afternoon.
About the Coalition for Transportation Choices
The Coalition for Transportation Choices (CTC) calls for a 21st century transportation system that enhances our economy and provides all Rhode Islanders with healthy transportation choices.

Rhode Island's 21st century transportation system must provide all people - employees, tourists, youth, elderly, able and disabled - with safe and dependable access to their community's opportunities for work, education, services, and recreation. The system should be considerably less dependent on cars and fossil fuels as well as efficient, effective and easy to use. It should minimize impacts to land, water and air and improve the health and well-being of all Rhode Islanders. Such a system should be sustained with predictable and consistent funding for operation and future growth.

CTC's work is supported by the Rhode Island Foundation, The Prospect Hill Foundation and Third Sector New England's Capacity Building Fund
