A chance to voice your opinion about
potential transportation improvements
on Aquidneck Island
Public input sought
The Aquidneck Island Planning Commission (AIPC) is working in close partnership with its member communities of Newport, Middletown and Portsmouth and with other local, state and federal agencies to complete a 24-month study that will result in the development of a Comprehensive Multi-Modal Transportation Master Plan for Aquidneck Island.

The commission has already held several public hearings to gather community input. You're invited to attend the next meeting on Thursday, December 9, from
6 PM to 9 PM at the Aquidneck Island Christian Academy on 321 East Main Road in Portsmouth. Click here to download a flyer with all the details.

From the Planning Commission website:

"This project is critically important to the future economic viability and quality of life on Aquidneck Island. It will reach across all modes of transportation (bus, rail, bike, pedestrian, auto, etc.) and seek to make modal connections and improvements consistent with sound land use planning - all in an effort to increase overall mobility, modal choice, and safety for our residents, businesses, employees, and visitors while decreasing traffic congestion and its negative impacts on our environment, economy and quality of life. The study will draw upon previous studies in the area."

House Environment Committee holds hearing on transportation
CTC thanks the members of the House Committee on Environment and Natural Resources for holding a hearing on transportation issues last week. CTC co-chair John Flaherty testified at the hearing. Officials responsible for both the highways and the transit system echoed CTC's message that a lack of stable, long-term funding is undermining efforts to repair roads and upgrade the state's transportation system.

About the Coalition for Transportation Choices
The Coalition for Transportation Choices (CTC) calls for a 21st century transportation system that enhances our economy and provides all Rhode Islanders with healthy transportation choices.

Rhode Island's 21st century transportation system must provide all people - employees, tourists, youth, elderly, able and disabled - with safe and dependable access to their community's opportunities for work, education, services, and recreation. The system should be considerably less dependent on cars and fossil fuels as well as efficient, effective and easy to use. It should minimize impacts to land, water and air and improve the health and well-being of all Rhode Islanders. Such a system should be sustained with predictable and consistent funding for operation and future growth.

CTC's work is supported by the Rhode Island Foundation, The Prospect Hill Foundation and Third Sector New England's Capacity Building Fund
