The Future of Transit in Rhode Island
Metro Study Header
Despite (maybe because of) the economic challenges we face, the future of improved transit in Rhode Island remains bright. We know that investments in transit are a win for the economy, a win for the environment and a win for people looking to reduce their household transportation costs.

And now, not only do more Americans favor investments in cleaner, more efficient transportation choices, but it's clear that federal transportation investments are now shifting away from new road capacity and toward more convenient, reliable and frequent public transit.

RIPTA and the City of Providence have been preparing for this with the recent completion of the Metro Area Transit Enhancement Study, positioning Rhode Island to effectively compete for the needed funds to implement a broadly supported vision for a 21st century statewide transit system. With that in mind, the CTC will begin featuring a different element of the planned improvements each month, along with a status report of progress on that element.

This month's featured improvement is the Rapid Bus proposal, planned for the 11/99 Route serving Providence and Pawtucket. You can review all the planned improvements of the Metro Study report HERE.

Stay tuned for further updates.

About the Coalition for Transportation Choices
The Coalition for Transportation Choices (CTC) calls for a 21st century transportation system that enhances our economy and provides all Rhode Islanders with healthy transportation choices.

Rhode Island's 21st century transportation system must provide all people - employees, tourists, youth, elderly, able and disabled - with safe and dependable access to their community's opportunities for work, education, services, and recreation. The system should be considerably less dependent on cars and fossil fuels as well as efficient, effective and easy to use. It should minimize impacts to land, water and air and improve the health and well-being of all Rhode Islanders. Such a system should be sustained with predictable and consistent funding for operation and future growth.

CTC's work is supported by the Rhode Island Foundation, The Prospect Hill Foundation and Third Sector New England's Capacity Building Fund
